Behold, This Child . . . *

Painting by Julie Fink

“And she brought forth
her firstborn son”

Luke 2:7 (KJV)

Even here a new star
has risen above
the city underpass,
packing-crate home
what family tucked
in the suburbs
ever dreamed of,
or imagined a baby
swaddled in newspaper,
his mother having
just given birth
and suckled the child,
the man she calls husband
whispering the name
revealed in dream,
the name above every name,
like any other newborn’s.

“Behold, This Child . . .” was first featured at the invitation of Ms. Loretta Fulton on her website:

* “And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary, his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;

“(Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”
Luke 2:34-35 (KJV)
