Invocation

“. . . knowing that in this world in this time
enduring is all our victory,
but victory nonetheless.”
(Niall Williams)*

William Topa

The Polar Vortex bears down
on Abilene, West Texas
weather-nervous streets,

their people, the huddled homeless,
in whatever angle of downtown buildings
might deny the North Wind’s laugh,

blast of ice and snow, that whistle
between bared teeth and tongue
no animal or human dare answer.

Pastor and Social Work Minister
and Chef of Hot Meals Offered Freely
and even Misplaced Poet

whisper the prayer, the poem,
of City Light Community Ministries:
“God, do what You can.”
