The Light Standard
Robert A. Fink
The final issue (#115) of The Hardin-Simmons University Light Standard was emailed as a pdf file attachment to HSU faculty, staff, administration and a select mailing list on May 2, 2014, the end of the spring semester. I had been compiling, editing, sometimes writing, and always laying out each issue since the first one, September 11, 2009. Five years. A weekly issue during the fall and the spring semesters. It was a good idea at the start. I still considered it a good idea at the end. It was a peaceful death. I was the only mourner.
It began as a newsletter highlighting the professional activities and honors of the Hardin-Simmons faculty. Then it focused on personal articles written by the faculty. Then it expanded to include articles by staff members. Quickly Wrangler, my part Australian shepherd, mostly wolf, dog, climbed into the editor’s chair, and took over. Wrangler was in. Bob was out. Everyone loved Wrangler. Well . . . not always the administration. Then Wrangler died March 13, 2013. This past year, Lucy, our beautiful Aussie pup (now one year old), tried to fill in. She did her best. She isn’t Wrangler.
In the third or fourth year, I thought the faculty might prefer the Light Standard to go online, so I designed (and I use the word loosely) this web site and named it A Thin Silence. I had no interest in a personal web site and certainly none in a personal blog. The only good that could come of my writing my daily activities would be to confirm what an exciting life you have. I was wrong about the faculty’s wanting to write for a web site. I am often wrong about the faculty. So A Thin Silence became thinner and even more silent. I went back to emailing pdf files of the Light Standard.
At the start of this summer, I thought, hey, I’ve paid for this site, so maybe I’ll do something with it. Not much, as you can see. It looks to me like a personal, mutual admiration of me web site. For obvious reasons, I have not permitted comments from the one or two viewers who have stumbled upon the site. I’ll probably maintain A Thin Silence until time to renew for another year.
Here’s where I’ve been heading: the articles (Pages) saved on the site are mostly those I wrote for this past year’s Light Standard (2013-2014), so I thought I would try and explain what the LS is . . . was. This rambling narrative might qualify as a “blog” entry. See how exciting your life is!
